Welcome to the Eastern European Institute
at Sigmund Freud University

The Eastern European Institute has two major purposes:

1. To aid in the development of the field of Psychotherapy in Eastern European nations

We seek to provide educational, research and training opportunities to persons from Eastern European nations, whenever possible in their native language.

These include: The establishment and support of collaborative research and education in Psychotherapy Sciences, providing Psychotherapy Training in the various Psychotherapeutic modalities, and guidance in the establishment of uniform and legal standards for the practice of Psychotherapy.

2. To establish a Psychotherapy Research Center that deals specifically with Eastern European issues

Eastern European issues in the fields of Psychology and Psychotherapy have been increasingly of interest to international researchers. Vienna’s unique geographical location and its role as a UN headquarters, presents the ideal environment to host Western scholars in residence who are interested in investigating these issues.

Research topics will include: cultural differences, refugee issues, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders experienced as a result of events during socialist regimes; the psychological after-effects of the collapse of socialism; immigration and asylum-seeking issues; nationalism; regional conflict; economic difficulties, etc.
