Curriculum for the Master's Programme

Course aim:
To convey an understanding of how the psychotherapeutic situation as a place of acquisition of scientific insight influences the formulation of concepts of illness and their development and treatment. The possibilities and impossibilities that arise from this. Thus, the differences will become clear between various concepts of illness as they were taught in the lectures about medical basics. Furthermore, the psychoanalytic concepts of drives, affects, defenses, splitting, sexual development, intra-psychic and interpersonal conflicts will be presented in the light of findings in the emotion- and affect research and general psychology. This course focuses on the research of R. Krause and colleagues (Saarbruecken) and will be presented in the classical form of lectures. In the seminar, students will work through selected chapters of the course literature. Self-experimental elements will also be applied.

Course contents:
Conditions of satisfying sexuality, the sexual reaction cycle, disorders and their classifications, and possible reasons for sexual disorders will be discussed and illustrated on the basis of case studies. Psychotherapeutic measures and possible interventions will be reviewed.

Course aim:
Students will learn to conduct a sexual anamnesis, form hypotheses about possible causes, and develop a repertoire of intervention tactics and exercises. Students will learn about symptoms, background issues, and psychotherapeutic intervention tactics.

The development of the psychoanalytic method will be presented in a historical context (based on the works of Bernheim and Charcot; the collaboration between Freud, Fliess and Breuer). The road from hypnosis to the cathartic method and free association: from cathartic healing to the interpretation of resistance and the discovery of transference in the Dora analysis.
Course contents: The theoretical and technical developments after Freud: American ego psychology and the classic standard technique (Hartmann, Kris, Löwenstein). Eissler's parameter discussion. The object relations theory (Klein, Bion, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Ogden, Meltzer), self-psychology (Kohut), the treatment of "early disorder" and the borderline personality organization (Rosenfeld, Kernberg), the development of child analysis (Anna Freud, Winnicott, Klein), group analysis (Foulkes, Bion), the French school of psychoanalysis (Laplanche, De M'Uzan), structuralism (Lacan), and the intersubjective approach (Mitchell, Benjamin). The course will provide a guide to the science-historical exploration of people, concepts and institutions that have gained importance in the history of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Familiarization with this field will happen via the literature provided on the semester reference shelf; the mandatory written paper about a predetermined topic will be supported by regular progress reports in the plenary or in small groups. The seminar topics may be expanded to the history of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, including traditional forms of psychotherapy and concepts of intercultural psychotherapy.
Procedure, method, number of participants: Plenum, small groups. First meeting in plenary, in between small group work (with or without consultation with the lecturer). One of the group tasks will be to record the meetings and write reports.

Course aim:
The aim of this course is to impart knowledge about the methodology of empirical psychotherapy research. Methodology, Design and Evaluation (Kendall); Methodological Issues in Studying Psychotherapy Processes and Outcome (Hill). Particular emphasis will be placed on the research approaches of K. Grawe's Bernese Group.

The course deals with the psychoanalytic theory of technique: the basic concepts of resistance and transference, transference neurosis, countertransference; understanding of clarification, confrontation and interpretation, of remembering, repeating, working through. Various theories of technique will be derived from their basic principles, their applicability tested and compared (Freud, Klein, Winnicott, I-Psychology, Kohut, Kernberg, Meltzer). Basic elements of psychoanalytic treatment technique: setting, rule of abstinence, free association. Techniques of dream interpretation. Special problems in dealing with countertransference (projective identification and counter-identification). The psychoanalytic initial interview as well as the finalization of a treatment and its specific dynamics.
