Hemayat
Care center for survivors of torture and war

Mag. Petra Rothner-Amin | Clinical and Health Psychologist, Vienna
3 June 2025 | 6 pm – 7.30 pm, online via Zoom

The ‘Hemayat’ non-profit association (from Arabic and Persian, meaning ‘protection’) supports adults, children and young people with a refugee background who have experienced war and/or torture in their past. The association offers psychological support in various forms – from individual psychotherapy and clinical-psychological counselling with native language interpreters to movement and art therapies, children’s groups and group therapies for adults. A particular focus is also the clinical-psychological assessment of torture survivors in accordance with the Istanbul Protocol.

The aim of our work is to alleviate the symptoms that profound traumatisation has left behind in our clients and to integrate them into their biography to such an extent that it becomes possible and worthwhile to continue living in the here and now. Recognising the suffering and injustice caused by human beings plays a central role in this, as does regaining the ability to act and cope with everyday life.

In our presentation, we will be happy to talk about our work as clinical psychologists in the care of survivors of war and torture, the special challenges associated with this and why it is nevertheless worth turning to this target group in your professional life.
