Studying psychology opens up a wide range of professional opportunities. Working as a psychologist is possible in many professional fields, depending on the specialisation. In order to facilitate orientation, a selection of professional fields will be presented at this event. Psychologists from each SFU branch will present their fields of work and provide an insight into their everyday work. There will be first-hand information as well as room for exchange and questions. Language of presentation will be English.

Counseling & Intervention Center against Domestic Violence
Insights into the needs and challenges of supporting affected women

In this lecture, I would like to give practical insights into my work as a psychologist in a specialist counseling and intervention center against domestic violence. The main focus will be on the many facets of this work, which ranges from crisis intervention and support in dealing with trauma-related stress to counseling on issues around breakups and psychosocial support during court trials. Practical examples will be used to illustrate the challenges – and in particular the structural and systemic deficits – in dealing with and working with survivors of gender-based violence. Above all, I would also like to show why this work is so important for society as a whole and so rewarding for me personally.

About the Lecturer

I am currently in the final stages of my Master’s degree in clinical psychology and have several years of professional experience in working with various groups of people affected by different forms of violence. In my Bachelor’s thesis entitled “creating safe(r) spaces for survivors of sexualized violence”, I dealt extensively with what kinds of support people affected by violence need in a professional context. Since May 2024, I have been working as a psychologist in a specialist counseling and intervention center against domestic violence in a suburb of Berlin.
