On 25 March, SFU’s Institute for Transgenerational Trauma Transfer Research hosted another session within the #outofthebox workshop series titled “The Intersection of Trauma, Culture, and Mental Health”, led by Jason Izadi. This was the first time the workshop was held online, allowing participants from other SFU branches and beyond to join, and fostering a sense of community.

Exploring Trauma-Informed Care for Immigrant and Refugee Communities

The workshop focused on the impact of trauma on immigrant and refugee populations, addressing challenges such as pre-migration violence and post-migration stressors like discrimination. Participants learned culturally sensitive strategies for trauma-informed care and how to support recovery and resilience in diverse communities. Practical approaches and research examples were shared to promote inclusive mental health practices, and the session concluded with a lively Q&A discussion, encouraging participants to apply these insights in clinical practice and research.

We consider this workshop a great success, thanks to the many participants from various countries who joined us. We hope to organise more online and hybrid events in the future to enable participation from our students and colleagues across other SFU branches. And so, we would like to invite you to the next event in the #outofthebox series, this time in a hybrid format, on Tuesday, 22 April, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
