About us

The main library and the law library of the Sigmund Freud Private University Vienna are reference libraries, therefore it is not possible to borrow items for use outside the library. The total print collection currently comprises approx. 40,000 items, mainly books and journals in German and English. The content ranges from general psychology, psychotherapy science, psychoanalysis, ethnopsychoanalysis and medicine to cultural studies, philosophy and law.

Reading room and classification system

In the reading rooms of the libraries (Freudplatz 1, 3rd floor, and Lassallestraße 3, 6th floor), key subject literature, semester course reserves as well as all new acquisitions and current print journals are available in open access shelving.

The library’s classification system provides information on the arrangement of materials in the open access area of the reading rooms. Works can be used on site in the reading rooms and can partly be scanned or copied. Materials from the depot must be requested in advance and will then be made available as soon as possible.

Independent researches within the print collection can be conducted via the library catalogue, the library team is happy to assist with specific enquiries.

The main library also offers three workstations with the statistical software SPSS installed. Two additional workstations are available in the law library.

Library policy

Bags, backpacks and coats must be stored in the designated lockers in the entrance area of the library. Loud talking, the use of cell phones and eating is not allowed. Pets are not permitted in the reading rooms.
