International Conference on Ethnic and Religious Minorities in Iran
with a special focus on the role of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS)

24-25 September 2021

The objectives of the conference are to:

  • briefly present the religious minorities’ situation in Iran;
  • debate the experiences of the ethnic and religious minorities in Iran, such as Jews, Yarsani, Christians, Sabeans, Mandaeans, Baha’i, Zoroastrians, Baluch, Kurds, Turks, Gilaki, Arabs and others;
  • explore concepts such migration process, religious identity and Diaspora;
  • discuss how the migration process affects the identity of religious minorities in the diaspora;
  • discuss the inception and development of the HIAS project, its history and operations in Austria and the work it did towards supporting Jewish and other religious minority communities in Vienna;
  • further explore the current challenges that minorities face, with an emphasis on the religious minorities in Iran and the key role that HIAS can play in that respect.
