Between Care, Psychology and Administration
The Complex Role of a Special Education Caregiver
Lecture with Jana Maar, MSc | Psychologist, Berlin
29 April 2025 | 6 pm – 7.30 pm, online via Zoom
In this guest lecture, I will provide insight into my work as a special education caregiver in a shared living apartment for individuals with cognitive disabilities. I will discuss the importance and challenges of this profession, highlighting how it contributes to personal and professional growth as a psychologist while also being highly demanding due to organizational challenges and structural barriers. Additionally, I will explore the unique nature of relational work in this context, where professional distance must be balanced with deep trust and meaningful connections. This lecture aims to offer a realistic and thought-provoking perspective on a field that is both rewarding and complex.
About the Lecturer
I have a background in psychology (M.Sc., University of Potsdam; B.Sc., SFU Berlin) and business administration (IHK-certified wholesale and foreign trade clerk). Since 2021, I have been working in special education caregiving for individuals with cognitive disabilities, accompanied by my dog in my daily work with clients.
During my studies, I gained experience in psychosocial project work and university student support while also volunteering as a student representative. My work has included counseling, coordination, research, and administrative tasks. Through my internships, I also gained insights into therapeutic interventions, such as equine-assisted therapy.
I am committed to intersectional social justice, equity, and empowerment, striving to approach my work with analytical thinking, empathy, and a solution-oriented mindset.
