„Psychoanalysis and Music“

In his lecture „Psychoanalysis and Music“, Thomas Barth examines connections between the two fields in the form of audio examples and methodological contributions. He will also explore the question of which phenomena are effective in both musical and psychotherapeutic settings and which musical qualities can also prove useful for psychoanalytical practice.

  • For Psychotherapy Science students, participation can be credited as part of the “Window of Opportunity”. In addition to participating, students have to provide the assignments required by the faculty.

About the speaker

Dr. Thomas Barth, born 1965 in Vienna. Studied psychotherapy science at the SFU Vienna. Trained at the Psychoanalytic Seminar Innsbruck (PSI). Has worked as a psychotherapist in private practice for 15 years. Teaching analyst, supervisor and lecturer in the context of academic and psychoanalytic training (SFU/ PSI). Publications on the development of Sigmund Freud’s thought and concepts in the history of ideas, on the German philosopher Else Voigtländer and in the fields of gerontology and cultural studies. Musical training (piano) in Austria, Denmark and New York, including master classes with Herbie Hancock (1987) and Joe Zawinul (1992). International studio and live productions and CD releases. Film music for the documentary „Wer hat Angst vor Wilhelm Reich“ (2009). Ongoing collaboration in trio formation (jazz).
