Rainer Funk, born in 1943, had been working as a psychoanalyst in private practice in Tübingen since 1979. He received his doctorate in 1977 with a thesis on Erich Fromm's social psychology and ethics and was Fromm's last research assistant in Locarno in the 1970s. Fromm appointed him as his rights and estate administrator. Funk contributed Fromm's estate and library to the Erich Fromm Institute in Tübingen, which is open to the public and those interested in science from Thursday to Saturday.

Between 1977 and 1983, Funk trained as a psychoanalyst and analytical couple therapist at the Stuttgart Academy for Depth Psychology and Analytical Psychotherapy.
In addition to his therapeutic practice, Funk has held teaching positions in Bremen, Reutlingen, Fulda and Bologna since the 1980s and has been a lecturer at the International Psychoanalytic University (IPU) in Berlin since 2013. Since 2016, he has also co-directed the Erich Fromm Study Center.
